Should I automatically hire the agent with the most sales?
By Steve Lockhart
The short answer
No. High volume can signal experience, but the busiest agent is not automatically the best fit for your situation. Ask whether their volume is in the neighborhoods and price range you need, and how much personal attention your file will get.
Full answer
No. High volume can signal experience, but the busiest agent is not automatically the best fit for your situation. Ask whether their volume is in the neighborhoods and price range you need, and how much personal attention your file will get. Experience matters; fit, communication, and strategy decide whether that experience helps you.
Sales volume is a marketing number until you know what produced it. An agent with many sales in one community may have little depth in yours, and a very high-volume agent may run a process where assistants handle most of the work. Ask directly who does what and what your experience would actually feel like.
The right test combines substance and fit: recent, relevant transactions, a process you understand, communication you can rely on, and a professional who answers your questions straight. The agent with the most impressive biography is only the right choice if that experience is relevant to your home, your price range, and your situation.

My strategy: hire the agent who interviews well on substance, not style, and keep the standards high, local depth, direct answers, and clear communication. The right fit makes the entire process easier from the first call to the closing table.
